Sustainable chlorine production in Spain. Chlorine is one of the key basic chemicals used in plastics production. Since chlorine does not occur naturally, it has to be produced artificially by electrolysis of common salt. This complex production process requires a significant amount of energy. A more sustainable method is the oxygen depolarized cathode technology, in which chlorine is produced by an oxygen depolarized cathode instead of a hydrogen-generating electrode.

The end products are chlorine and caustic soda, avoiding the by-product hydrogen. Since the beginning of 2019, a large-scale plant has been under construction at the Spanish site in Tarragona, where chlorine will be produced exclusively using this modern process for the first time. The Loibl Förderanlagen GmbH is supplying the conveyor technology for the project, from the salt feeding point to the saturation tank.
