Loibl Förderanlagen GmbH has played a key role in equipping biomass power plants in Japan in recent years by supplying highly specialized ash removal systems for a total of 15 biomass plants. The plants have been installed in various regions of Japan and use circulating fluidized bed (CFB) furnaces fired with wood pellets and palm kernel shells to generate environmentally friendly energy. The power plants range in capacity from 50 MWe to 75 MWe, making them an important part of Japan's transition to renewable energy sources.
Biomass and the role of ash removal
The combustion of biomass, especially wood pellets and palm kernel shells, is an important source of renewable energy in Japan. A key issue when using these fuels in fluidized bed boilers is the efficient handling and ash removal of the ashes produced during combustion. As these can reach temperatures of up to 850 °C, it is crucial that they are cooled quickly and safely and then transported to enable further use or safe disposal.
For the 15 biomass power plants in Japan, Loibl Förderanlagen GmbH supplied a large number of components as a complete ash removal system that enables rapid cooling and efficient transportation of the hot ash.
We supply the following ash removal systems for two main areas of the plants:
- At the boiler and at the heat exchanger: this is where the hot bed ash is produced directly after combustion. After the heat transfer to the boiler, the bed ash is further treated and transported.
- At the 2nd pass: Additional quantities of ash that are produced during the further combustion processes are removed here.
Loibl's scope of delivery
Cooling screw conveyors, supplied in various designs, ensure rapid cooling of the hot ash from 850 °C to 200 °C. The innovative design of the cooling screws accelerates cooling, which is very important for the safety and operation of the power plants. Robust trough chain conveyors that ensure reliable ash removal by effectively transporting the ash away. They are equipped with emergency ash removal devices so that the ash can be discharged quickly and reliably if necessary without overloading or blocking the conveyor systems.
Flat slide valves made of heat-resistant stainless steel, suitable for the high-temperature range, are particularly robustly designed to enable reliable shut-off and control of the ash discharge even with material columns of up to 5 m in height. Expansion joints, which are also heat-resistant, prevent damage caused by thermal expansion. Special piping on the heat exchanger ensures continuous discharge of the bed ash, taking into account the high ash temperatures.
